The EdgeRouter

The Ubiquiti EdgeRouter series is Networkmaine's newest routing hardware solution. The EdgeRouter Lite is intended to replace the older Cisco routers, while EdgeRouter Pro is being deployed to sites with fiber-optic circuits, and as a replacement for the previous-generation Joebox appliance.

The Edgerouter offers a fully featured firewall solution. The firewall is capable of managing open and closed port rules, NAT, and port forwarding. These rules can be used in order to prevent or allow access to your network/devices from outside of your network.

EdgeRouter Lite

The EdgeRouter Lite is a small routing appliance built by Ubiquiti. It has three Gigabit Ethernet ports and is listed as having a routing throughput of at least 1 Gbps. The EdgeRouter Lite uses a Dual-Core Cavium Octeon+ CPU and 512 MB of RAM.

  • Optional local DHCP and DNS services

  • Some firewall capabilities as outlined above

EdgeRouter Pro

The EdgeRouter Pro is a 1U rack-mountable appliance built by Ubiquiti. It has six independent Gigabit Ethernet ports as well as two RJ45/SFP ports and is listed as having a routing throughput of 8 Gbps. The EdgeRouter Pro uses a Dual-Core Cavium Octeon II CPU and 2 GB of RAM.
The Edgerouter, while being capable of high throughput, does not provide all of the same features as the Joebox. The key differences are as follows:

  • No shared firewall management access

  • No VPN connections

  • No built-in web filter

Due to the lack of shared management for the firewall's configuration, all changes or configuration requests must go through the Networkmaine support staff. Additionally, we are currently only providing the firewall feature of the EdgeRouters to sites with infrequent configuration changes.

Additional features include:

  • Optional local DHCP and DNS services

  • Some firewall capabilities as outlined above
